It's not you. Bad doors are everywhere. Don Norman doors are deliberately confusing.

All PUSH/PULL signs do is make you feel like a tit after you get it wrong. I just mindlessly try and open the door in the direction my brain assumes it moves, and only then will I read the sign, but by then I have already figured out I got it wrong.
For whatever reason glass doors are the worst offenders when it comes to this.
