I don't follow the logic of this article. 

I read it as "learning to code" being made into a panacea bandwagon, while in reality, coding is only one facet of a growing and rapidly changing field. "Software engineering is a lucrative field, but the transformation from “coder” to “engineer” is challenging."

So... Learn to engineer?

How about, learn to be thoughtful and solve problems. 

I thought learning to code and learning to engineer help you practice those. 

probably doing both of those without instruction or oversight helps you
