Phishing is one of the most successful ways to get into a network. Depending on how "hard" the hacker wants to try, they can get real creative. They can get information about recent events or even go online and see company rumors. Then they tailor phishing emails to those.
There's loads of pent tester stories online that people can read about. It's insanely interesting to see how successful some of this stuff is.
