"The Nobel Prizes were the brainchild of Alfred B. Nobel, an idiosyncratic Swedish industrialist best known in his lifetime for inventing dynamite. Having no immediate heirs, he declared that the bulk of his fortune would be used to annually reward the persons “who, during the preceding year, shall have conferred the greatest benefit to mankind” in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace."
