Using a special type of MRI scan, the scientists found that their newly identified “consciousness network” was disrupted in patients with impaired consciousness.

A little clarity; "consciousness" does not mean the grand philosophical matter of the spirit or the soul or our individual human personalities etc... when used in the neurological sense. It just means the opposite of unconscious, aka being awake. Hence, if you actually read the paper / article, it being about coma tumors.
