Uber Surge Pricing in NYC -- Good or Bad?

Good that they dropped the price.
I know Über believes in free markets and supply and demand to set prices, but there are some times in which doing so just doesn't feel right.
Hopefully a process upon which they will improve.
I think this, ironically, was a lost opportunity to wildly succeed in NYC by showing extraordinary kindness; by offering free or reduced prices but getting drivers out there, it could have a goodwill move by the company --- "doing well by doing good."
You're right that it is a missed opportunity by Uber. It's a shame.
I thought they were leaving New York?
Just their taxis. But they're town car service is apparently getting kicked out of Chicago.
They're getting a reputation that governments don't like.
