Tony Manfred reports:
The Kansas City Chiefs plan on taking Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher with the No. 1 pick in tonight's NFL Draft, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports.
Luke Joeckel has been the consensus pick for a while, so taking Fisher would be a minor surprise.
In many ways, this is an unfortunate draft to have the No. 1 pick. There are no big can't-miss prospects, there are no elite quarterbacks, and the all the top players seem to be offensive and defensive lineman.
Eric Fisher is a great pick. He's the protege of 49er O-Line Genius Joe Staley.

49ers picked Eric Reid #18:
Bill Belicheck is a genius:

Bill Belichick traded the 29th overall pick to the Vikings for the 52nd, 83rd, 102nd, and 229th picks. That's a 2nd-rounder, 3rd-rounder, 4th-rounder, and 7th-rounder.
It's a massive haul.
For comparison, the Raiders traded the 3rd pick for the 12th pick and the 42nd pick.
The consensus is that this is one of the deepest drafts in recent memory. It's weak at the top, but the middle rounds are perceived to be unusually rich in talent.
The genius of is trade is that there might not even be that big a difference between the player picked 29th and the player picked 59th. Belichick basically flipped an asset in the weak part of the draft for multiple assets in the strong part of the draft.
Eric Reid is a fantastic match for Harbaugh/Fangio defense. He's a fast versatile safety and can play both strong safety and free safety. When he lines up in the middle, the defensive coordinator is able to disguise coverage. If the opposing offense doesn't know if the defense is biasing towards the run or the pass they can't make accurate adjustments during the snap. A truly great defensive coordinator can use disguised coverage to "bait" the offense into plays favorable to the defense. Just like in rock, paper, scissors, if you know what the other guy is going to do, you can probably win.
Reid is not a perfect safety, but he might just be the perfect safety for the 49ers.
