Why You Should Care About NASA

Stashed in: Science!, science, space, NASA to Me

When the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990, scientists discovered it had a flawed mirror.

All the images were blurry.

Although a repair mission years later would correct the problem, scientists wanted to make the best of a bad situation.

Software was developed to sharpen the images.

As it turned out, the same algorithms that helped sharpen the Hubble images were also useful for enhancing image from digital mammograms.

So, when you wonder if NASA should receive at least 1 cent per dollar of the Federal Budget... think of a breast cancer survivor.

There are unexpected benefits to NASA work. It's serendipity incarnate!
