Kinda. I have not read the full study but it seems to me here you're imagining someone who is good at the task, thereby anchoring it more in reality vs merely fantasizing. Both are helpful but I think this technique may be more effective because you're actually thinking of/imitating someone who is good at it.
Ah! It's like when we imitate a writing style until we're good enough to find our own voice?
