In Chinese you don't say I am a Buddhist. You say, I study Buddhism.
Similarly, you don't say I am a vegetarian; you say I regularly eat vegetarian food.
Spelling it out:
- I am a Buddhist = 我是個佛教徒 (nobody says that)
- I study Buddhism = 我學佛
Buddhists also refer to themselves as "students of the Buddha" = 佛弟子
Or "I believe in Buddhism", depending on what region you're from.
The use if a verb or a noun really shapes behavior http://www.gsb.stanford.edu/news/headlines/proscial-voting-2012.html
