The revolution in sports analytics made possible by the internet is having a lot of amazing unintended consequences. One of them was, of course, the rise of Nate Silver and predictive analytics applied to presidential elections. Another is crowdsourcing various kinds of data for which there is not currently anything like a central data source... for instance, school shootings or police-involved shootings.
In general this is a good use of crowdsourcing made possible by the Internet.
