ICE-SAR: The hardy band of volunteers who rescue tourists stuck in Iceland’s unforgiving landscape
Joyce Park stashed this in Travel
Iceland is so different from America. Over there, if tourists get in trouble on a glacier or in a storm, they are rescued by highly-trained bilingual volunteers from an organization founded by women that funds itself by selling fireworks and keychains.
Basically, everything Iceland does is badass.
And many things America does are just bad.
To be fair, a whole lot of ordinary people are helped by other ordinary people in emergencies in the US. If you've ever had someone pull you out of a snowbank with their truck, you feel me.
That's true. What makes Iceland different is that there's only 500k people in the whole country.Â
They have outsized badassery as a ratio of their population.
