Above is not the dress in question. Here's the story:

Social media is going crazy over a dress  that might be black and blue or white and gold

The dress first appeared on Tumblr with the caption, "guys please help me - is this dress white and gold, or blue and black? Me and my friends can’t agree and we are freaking the f--k out."

Here is he dress:

What color is this dress?

In short, some people see a dress that is blue and black, while others see a dress that is white and gold, and some see one combination at one time and later see another. According to one poll on BuzzFeed, 74% see white and gold.

So we put the dress to Photoshop, a program that should not be susceptible to variations in genetics or eye strength, to see what it sees.

Here are the results, and they are fascinating. Basically, one of the colors falls on the black/gold border and the other falls on the blue/white border.

At this point it appears to be just how your eyes adjust to the mix of colors. If your eyes are more sensitive to blue and black, that's what you see; if they are more sensitive to the lighter colors, that is what you see.

Absolute color versus how we've been trained to adjust to intended color.  I think the Photoshop interpretation is meaningless.  I had one of these monitors for the longest time: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SGI_1600SW

It was an awesome monitor. It came with a separate color monitor that would detect the output and color correct.

I wonder what color it says the dress is. Looks gold and white to me.

Two women are behind the viral dress that has everyone confused.

origin thedress Caitlin McNeill white gold or black blue dress - Business Insider

The picture was initially posted on Tumblr by a 21-year-old singer named Caitlin McNeill who lives on the tiny Scottish island of Colonsay.

In a telephone conversation with Business Insider on Thursday evening, McNeill explained that the dress in the picture was worn to her friends' wedding. Some people see the dress as it appears in the photo as white and gold, while others see it as blue and black

The dress was worn by the bride's mother. McNeill and her friends first realized something was different about the dress when the mother sent her daughter the now-famous photo.

"What happened was two of my close friends were actually getting married and the mother of the bride took a photo of the dress to send to her daughter," McNeill said. "When my friend showed the dress to her fiancé, they disagreed on the color."

The bride then posted the picture on Facebook, and her friends continued to debate the color of the dress.

"All of our friends disagreed," McNeill said.

The pair have teamed up to sell "Team #BlackandBlue" and "Team #WhiteandGold" t-shirts with the proceeds benefiting the Princess Project, and organization that provides free prom dresses to high school girls who can't afford them.

The shirts commemorate the fact the dress in the infamous photo appeared to some people to be white and gold while others saw it as blue and black

McNeill put the picture on a Tumblr fan page she runs for Weichel, who works with YouTube stars. The picture was originally taken by the mother of one of McNeill's friends. McNeill told Business Insider the mother took a photo of the dress because she  wore it to her daughter's wedding. When McNeill saw her friends debating the photo on Facebook, she decided to share it on Tumblr and internet history was made.

The t-shirts are selling for $14.99 on Represent.com and allow the wearer to declare which colors they saw. As of this writing, the site says over 600 t-shirts have been sold and almost twice as many people have chosen "Team #WhiteandGold."

The Dress will not be ignored!!

Emily sorry -- you almost escaped without seeing it at all. The chatter about it is finally dying down.

well, i was going to say that only weirdos would see the blue and black, since it is obviously gold and white, but now that i am back for a second time, all i can see is blue and black!

it is pretty fun, actually.

Yeah, it's funny because this is a well known illusion.

This is a good explanation:
