850ish years ago, Henry the Lion, Duke of Saxony, gave a Free Charter to the town of Lubeck, which eventually founded the Hanseatic League and gave birth to the concept of a free market. Today, northwestern Europe is still among the most prosperous regions on earth, and the model they pioneered on the coast of the Baltic Sea has brought billions of people out of the darkness.
