It's common in the Bay Area for clumps of hiking trails to be managed by different federal, state, county, local, and private agencies. This is a good view of the trails on Montara Mountain in Pacifica, which are in exactly this situation.

McNee Ranch State Park has the main trail:

San Pedro Valley Park features the easier and more shady inland ascent of Montara Mountain. There is also a small waterfall.
