But you also get to lose the sad memories. When my grandmother was dying, I noticed she seemed much happier because she had apparently forgotten that her husband and three of her kids were dead. She never seemed that distressed that she didn't recognize her living children any more.
This is not the first study to reveal that all the memories are still in there and can be restored:
But you're right, there's a lot of value to forgetting most things, especially sad memories.
