Isn't all this stuff about American "helicopter" parenting kind of... recent? When I was a kid it was certainly far more common to only eat at mealtimes, walk to school from a young age, bike and camp outdoors, be assigned chores, and be told that the goal of childraising was for both the parents and children to become happily independent at age 18.

Yes it's recent, and yes your upbringing was similar to mine on the other side of the country around the same time.

So parenting, coaching, and mentoring have a lot in common.
