I often wonder whether people with this kind of interest-over-time, the patience to grind away at things for years with little extrinsic reward, are fading away generationally or if it's an inborn trait like math talent that keeps popping up in about the same distribution year after year.

It is hard to find patience in the young generation so I think it's fading away.
