When Cornell Maier retired in 1989 as chairman and CEO of Kaiser Aluminum, he was offered a seat on the board of directors at Children's Hospital Oakland.

He turned it down and chose a different chair.

For the past 18 years, twice a week, the 90-year-old Oakland resident has visited the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit, sitting in a rocking chair and gently holding tiny, often sick babies.

"When you're holding a baby and the baby is touching your cheek, it's the warmest feeling you can have on this Earth," Maier said. "It's as close to heaven as you can get."

Oh man "it's as close to heaven as you can get" is a great line.
