On the subject of Tarantino taking part in the story: In Inglorious Basterds, during Bridgett von Hammersmark's murder scene, Tarantino expressed displeasure with how unrealistic choking scenes usually were. He politely asked Diane Kruger if, for the sake of realism, she would let herself be actually choked out, to be released immediately after her losing consciousness to no lasting ill effect. Kruger acquiesced, but Waltz wasn't really down, so Tarantino himself donned a nazi uniform and proceeded to choke out Diane Kruger, and that's the shot that made it into the actual film.
