Stay away from the Internet for at least an hour before your bedtime. ~@gretchenrubin
I've said it before and I'll say it again: Get enough sleep, and prioritize it over any other task.
Gretchen Rubin just published Seven Tips For Getting Yourself To Go To Bed On Time.
My personal favorite is #3:
Stay away from the internet for at least an hour before your bedtime. Television, too, but I think the Internet is even more apt to make me feel artificially wide awake. I used to try to go through my emails one last time before bed, to get a jump on the morning, but I realized that this stimulating activity made it much harder to go to sleep.
No coding. If you need to sleep, SLEEP.
No iPhoning.
No Facebook or Twitter or Tumblr. And DEFINITELY no Pinterest.
Instead, create a bedtime ritual and do it at the same time every night.
My tip is that I no longer allow myself to read exciting books at bedtime... nothing with a plot that might keep the pages turning. It's too bad, I used to love reading in bed but it's too easy to get caught up in a good book. I give myself special exceptions from this rule a couple times a year, like on long holiday weekends or my birthday.
Oh and I don't ENTIRELY stay away from the Internet before bed, but I turn off IM and don't answer email.
Here are some more:
- Drink only water or herbal tea after 8pm. No food.
- No Screens. The artificial light can mess up your body's sense of time.
- If you have to use a screen, turn down the brightness to the minimum legible.
- Light reading on Dead Trees okay.
- Get enough exercise during the week. 14 minutes every other day is sufficient.

I like this so much, I'm making it its own thread.
