A Glut of Antidepressants
Joyce Park stashed this in Healthcare
New study finds that 60% of those taking antidepressants did not meet the criteria for depression within the previous year.
I found this shocking: Ironically, while many patients in the United States are inappropriately diagnosed with depression, many who actually have it suffer without treatment. Dr. Mark Olfson, a professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, noted that from the time they develop major depression, it takes Americans eight years on average to seek care.
That's messed up that many people taking the meds don't need it and many people who need it aren't taking the meds.
The social stigmas are in the wrong places: stigma for seeking help when you are ill and no stigma for doctors who over-prescribe.
there is a good economic incentive for those doctors to please their patients with enough money to keep a home pharmacy
