The hard part about interviewing is asking hard questions that can be answered in a reasonable amount of time and also give insight into how the candidate thinks.

These days, people that can cross between frontend, backend and design are the true rockstars and exactly what we’re looking for, so I like to get a feel for whether they “just like to code requirements” or they can truly get proactive and help us build product.

Not so sure about this. Depends on how big the startup is and what kind of skills needed. Eng are like MDs: many specialties.
For instance, those that passed this interview architecture Q might not know how to build a relational database engine. ;)
