turns out i'm not the only one who loves private dance parties!

Researchers have found that “dancing is perceived to be a multidimensional activity that contributes positively to several aspects of human well-being”. In plain English, that means dancing:

  • lifts your mood by producing positive feelings and decreasing negative feelings at the same time.
  • boosts your immune system, thereby helping you to stay healthy.
  • fights stress by decreasing the concentration of the stress hormone cortisol in your blood.
  • improves your physical fitness, e.g., by fostering coordination, flexibility, and overall stamina.
  • helps you coping with pain.
  • improves your self-esteem and builds confidence.
  • And if you decide to dance in public, it has shown to be one of the most pleasurable social activities, helping you to connect to other people – which is one of the strongest well-being boosters in itself.

But that is not all there is to dancing. Here´s why you should put on your “dancing shoes” from time to time even when you’re at the office: There is empirical evidence that just five minutes of putting on some music and engaging in light dancing (with yourself) can markedly decrease fatigue.

This is awesome! I wanna put on my boogie shoes!

my my my my my boogie shoes!

Warning: Too much time in Boogie Shoes can lead to Boogie Fever.

hahahaha!  that made me laugh out loud.

Boogie Fever can be fatal! That's why everyone in the 70s was interested in Staying Alive!

Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother...

hahahaha!  and that video is epic!  i love the white waist-high skinny-pants.  and the guys popping their heads out from broken windows...

I guess waist-high skinny pants were big in 1977?

short01f.jpg

Distractingly tight pants and billowy shirts were a thing, yes.

like disco pirates!

"Swashbuckling"

Disco pirate bunnies!

The article made me think of this Los Campesinos song :)

They are from Cardiff, Wales

Step left, around, and together with the right!

Bingoboys are from Vienna, Austria

Dancing was the main theme of 1990.

that was the first cd i ever bought!

dude, check out his sweet turtleneck.  i wonder when that look will come back?

Is it me or did all their songs sound the same?

identical!  but to this 13-year-old, it was all awesome.

Did the 13 year old you like 2 Legit 2 Quit too?

Everything at that time sounded the same.

omg!  memories!  this stuff was so cool!  are you seeing those sweet pyrotechnics?!  and yes, they were all just remixes of the same thing.  but my taste was very limited still.  :)

It's like the 1980s and 1990s were made for teenagers!

it was a good time to be a kid.

I'd appreciate it a lot more if I could go back an re-live it a second time.

Janill Gilbert,  what does that video have to do with dancin',  except the words in the title?  Our violence grows and would probably move to other planets if we could manage it. Dancing helps relieve some of the stress our insane earth cultures create.

Good point. I will do a little dance to Peace Train...

...10,000 Maniacs version, of course.

but the 10,000 maniacs version is missing the arrhythmic clapping which is my favorite part!

Does the Dolly Parton version have the clapping?

no, but i do love dolly.  cat stevens' first version is the only one with the clapping.  it's so arrhythmic that it always makes me giggle to try to clap along!  it's impossible!!

Natalie Merchant Peace Train might be my fave.  Check it out!

Kathe, I think that's maybe what they are trying to get across in the song?  at least that's how I take it, you and me, and dancing, and we wouldn't have to keep doing the repetitive fighting.  Or the point of the video doesn't match the lyrics at all, and the animator was a friend, and that's what they did for free or low cost.  The words are what this article reminded me of, I had never seen the video before, but thought it was interesting, thought provoking, so posted it, so there would be something to look at ;)

i love that this thread has turned into a list of dancing videos!  (and janill, i love your new profile photo!)

Janill, makes sense to me!

Geege, the 10,000 Maniacs version IS the Natalie Merchant version.

Emily, I found the clapping Cat Stevens:

aw yisssssss!

he seemed like a happy guy.  (so stoned he tried to introduce his band twice!  haha!)

still, the live ladies are not clapping it up the way it's done in the recording.  and still, i cannot figure out when to clap!!

Dammit Adam, I knew that!  :)

Janill, remember Dangerous (Big Data)?  I have heard that it's turned into stripper music!

you've "heard"??

Wait, what?

you love yourself some strip clubs!!

Never happened.

bow chicka bow wow... i can just see you folding up your bills lengthwise, ever so carefully...

Like origami?

oh daaaang!  you're giving away your strip club secrets now?!

wow.  the kid is adorable, the reddit comments are hilarious, and then i was led down a long rabbit hole of dance videos and reddit funnies that included a hilarious iranian dubstep/breakdancing video and concluded with a scandanavian 2-year-old dancing to elvis.  ah... the magic of the internet!

Wow, I need to find that video!

look no further, my friend:

best reddit comments:

• And those gals are having such a blast!

• "This next dance is men only!....And the next dance is men only!... And here's one for all the men on the dance floor!... Men, hit this dance floor cause this one is for you!....."

• ALL THE SINGLE LADIES IN THE HOUSE, CAN I GET AN OVERBEARINGLY DEPRESSING SILENCE?!   HELL YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

and here's the elvis kid:

Too cute!

right, janill?!  i almost started crying when he bowed at the end.  :)

Yes!! Thank you Emily!!!

OMG - thanks so much for sharing!  Imagine what he will do when he comes out of his diapers!

Emily this is my celebratory party hat ;)  Geege, I hadn't heard that song, looks new ;)  BTW, I think my first album was Cat Steven's- Buddha and the Chocolate Box, or  Peter Frampton Live!  I would have to check with my mommy to make sure ;)

Also a curious note about Cat Steven's, many years ago he converted to Islam.

Wikipedia:

Yusuf Islam (born Steven Demetre Georgiou; 21 July 1948), commonly known by his former stage name Cat Stevens.

Stevens converted to Islam[10] and adopted the name Yusuf Islam the following year. In 1979, he auctioned all his guitars for charity[11] and left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community.

Steven Georgiou, born in the Marylebone area of London,[14] was the third child of a Greek-Cypriot father, Stavros Georgiou (b. 1900),[15] and a Swedish mother, Ingrid Wickman (b. 1915).[16] Steven had an older sister, Anita, and a brother, David.[14] The family lived above the Moulin Rouge, a restaurant that his parents operated on the north end of Shaftesbury Avenue which was a short walk from Piccadilly Circus in the Soho theatre district of London. All family members worked in the restaurant.[14] His parents divorced when he was about eight years old, but they continued to maintain the family restaurant and live above it.

i wondered why he fell off the face of the earth...

curious indeed.  i'd never heard that story.

His catalog still makes over a million dollars a year that he donates to charity.

When I hear danger, I think John Oliver!

Danger is his middle name!

Janill, here's the Dangerous stash but the video since has been disabled.

Here it is again:

geege, that is freaky-deaky!  but i can see how the song lends itself to sexy dancing!

i wish the video were of you making origami with your money at a strip club...

that is fantastic!  "a very fun way to throw your money around!" and i was right: it starts with a lengthwise fold!
