Actually, the first thing to do is tighten up:
Need willpower right now? Clench your fists, cross your arms, tense your muscles, and stand up straight. (Improving your posture can improve your self control.)
And then the second thing to do is meditate?
Hmmm, that seems incompatible.
They're working by different pathways.
Tightening up is all related to embodied cognition; when your body feels stronger and tougher you're more likely to behave that way.
Meditation increases attention span which can help you persist and translate into greater willpower.
Ah, I get it.
